What criteria affect screen resolution?

For example, I have a laptop with an intel graphics card and gtx 850m (nvidia), there is an hdmi connector and a mini display port. The laptop screen supports 1920x1080px. I want to take a WQHD (2560 x 1440) monitor. Will the laptop be able to give this resolution (2560 x 1440) to the monitor?
Also interested in what affects this factor (video card, RAM, etc.).

Both HDMI and Display Port support up to 3840x2160.
The only thing is that DisplayPort supports two video cards (FreeSync, G-sync), but in your case this is not necessary, so it makes no difference which connector to use.
The resolution depends on the memory on the video card, therefore, you can look at the specification of the video card, what resolutions it supports, and for 2d it is free to use (regular applications, watching videos)
As for toys, rendering is a high-load task, so the higher the resolution, the more difficult the task. Usually, for rendering modern shooters at high resolutions, even the top-end video may not be enough. so came up with Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync support. And laptop videos are always inferior to similar desktop ones, so I don’t think it makes sense to take a monitor if the goal is toys.

A laptop on a WQHD (2560 x 1440) monitor will give this resolution without any problems. Graphic information on the monitor, TV, etc. the video card outputs, this is its original function. RAM and CPU will affect the comfortable / not comfortable work at high resolutions in games, applications, videos. I think I just wrote for understanding.

Support must be at the video card and monitor. Your video card is fine.
If you are going to work at this resolution, watch movies, surf the Internet, then no problem. In games at this resolution, your laptop will die.
