Ubuntu and ACPI how?

In Ubuntu 10.10, I ran into an issue with my laptop's (Asus F80S) ACPI kernel support. With acpi enabled, even the installation refused to start. Now I tried to run 11.04 in live mode - the same thing. The only way out I know is to set acpi=off on boot. But who needs an axis without acpi? Especially on the laptop. Tell me how to be? I thought about dumping it on another distribution kit.

I would try booting from some new LiveCD , going through "lspci -vv", "lshal", kernel config, etc. It helped when my laptop from my distro's LiveCD wouldn't boot.
