Textmate is a very good text editor with a bunch of plugins and a low barrier to entry (unlike, say, vim).

The “poorest” editors are evil. Take a normal IDE right away (I recommend NetBeans), it will do everything flawlessly, and you will gain useful experience.

There is one more recommendation, in pursuit, if you want an analogue of Textmate for windows - Sublime Text (www.sublimetext.com) is a completely functional and powerful replacement. Extremely convenient and lightweight editor.
