The internal HDD pocket is not detected in the BIOS, what could be the reason?

I put in the Toshiba satellite L40-17U inner pocket Maiwo NSTOR-12-IDE, HDD Fujitsu 160 Gb SATA connector - IDE is not detected in the BIOS.
What are the options?

What happens if you connect the same disk directly, bypassing the "pocket", and what if you put another disk (preferably known to work) in the "pocket"?

Either this is a very stupid adapter - it only works with a driver in Windows, or it is defective.
In both cases, a replacement is needed.
