Talking about salary with your boss?
I would like to share my observations and listen to the opinion of colleagues in the shop about salaries.
People come to our company, have an interview and, if they suit us, they answer the question: "What salary do you want?". The salary range in our vacancy is very wide and has nothing to do with the real state of affairs. Something like 30-120k. Probably to attract candidates.
And then everything happens very sadly: two people of approximately the same level come. One wants 100, the second 50.
The first is given 100, the second 50. Well, with the proviso that, of course, they pull on these amounts. In this case, both are pulling at 100, but the second candidate, due to life circumstances / modesty / fear of not getting a job or something else, names the amount half as much as he could have received.
Then these two people begin to work. Talking about salaries is forbidden in the team, this is reported at the stage of hiring and people observe this, although such conversations do not harm anyone except the management.
These people start working and the second one (who is over 50k) will never get 100. Well, maybe it will be more precise, but not very soon. It is customary for the company to index once a year, usually 5-10% of the salary. Well, because inflation, rising prices, and so on.
Talking about a salary increase with the boss boils down to the following theses:
- The fact that you have grown professionally is a merit of the company, among other things, because the company encourages new technologies, refactorings, and you do not sit in a swamp of technologies, as happens in other companies.
- The fact that you have grown professionally is also good for you (served as almost a bonus to your salary).
- If money is more important to you than interesting products you are working on, then this is wrong. We are doing interesting projects here, which are used by thousands of people.
- I'll raise your salary, and you'll come back in three months. I can't constantly raise it for you.
In short, here are the conclusions I made for myself:
- It is easier to get a high salary at the stage of employment than to increase it within the company.
- We need to talk about salaries, I think. This allows you to keep your finger on the pulse and those who are underpaid will see it. They will ask for more, which in turn will raise the average level of wages in the industry. Concealment of salary is a deceit and it is not profitable for anyone except the head of the company.
- The process of salary increase should be agreed upon at the stage of employment, because these are always unpleasant conversations, and if they are appointed (for example, once a year we talk about an increase), then everything becomes easier.
- At the device stage, you need to say that you are going to grow professionally and get more. Perhaps the employer does not need it.

You talk from the employee's point of view, and the manager talks from the manager's point of view, and the company sets goals from the company's point of view.
Naturally, it is convenient for ANY company to pay less if it can pay less. Hence these prohibitions on discussing salaries between employees. The truth is twofold here - if someone knocks out a big salary for themselves, and then everyone wants to knock out a big salary for themselves - it is possible that the business that the company runs will not be able to pay all employees a high salary and keep its profit at a level - the company will lose the potential for development and through will close for a while.
It must be understood that any company exists due to a certain balance, and therefore everyone is engaged in his career and his salary himself.
And if a company has an established regular indexation mechanism, then this is quite good in the realities of the CIS, where people can work for 5-10 years for the same salary.
Well, the fact that you can get the most increase in salary when changing jobs is a well-known fact.
I raised my professional level quite quickly

. Bottom line, no one raised the salary to the market, everyone said that I would not find a job with the salary anymore.
Always after leaving, I found a job with a salary, which I asked for at the previous place.
I don’t know if this is the case in our country or in the world, but that’s how it is.
Agree with EVGENY T. . Only I have a longer term - one and a half to two years. If after a year and a half or two years the management does not make any progress towards increasing salaries, you can start looking for a new place, most likely there will be no progress.

We need to talk about salary. In modern realities, the probability of getting a raise without such conversations is "extremely small." Of course, it is best to go into such negotiations with a “plan B” in reserve and be ready at any moment to refuse the deal and leave. Alternatively, if it is difficult for you to initiate such conversations, when applying for a job, conclude not an open-ended contract, but an employment contract for a year, so in a year the question of the conditions for further cooperation will rise by itself.
