Should I switch to Linux on a 2002 laptop? If so, which one?

Rummaging on my balcony, I found greetings from 2002 - an old FUJITSU laptop on AMD Turion X2 32bit, with a built-in, 1GB of RAM on Windows 7 (there was Vista before, judging by the sticker, and remained like the second one, but did not start), and with HDD .
I successfully turned it on (fortunately, there was a charger next to it, the battery, of course, died) and tried to start skype. It started, but the laptop started to slow down so much that IE smokes on the sidelines.
And then I thought about reinstalling THIS lightweight Linux distribution on some thread. But which one to choose? It is desirable that I can run three windows on the laptop (including the browser). I don't care about the design, but I don't need something like MS-DOS either. And whether to switch to Linux at all?

With a gig of memory, you will not be able to work with modern video in any way with a modern browser, even if you don’t put any DE under it at all.
Typewriter and Skype are fundamentally different tasks.
Well, you will pull some Ubuntu 10.04 on this hardware. Well, it will run. Any action - at the speed of sunset. Swap immediately from the launch of the browser, and there is also a crappy screw, do not go to a fortune teller. Messengers such as Skype, during installation, simply will not detect hardware to suit their requirements. Masochism, and nothing more.
The best thing you can do with this machine is to put XP, old toys and make some gamer happy for 40 ;)
(sigh, remembering Daggerfall on a laptop from the early 90s)

Especially for such purposes, there is a distribution kit Runtu Lite

An upgrade is of course desirable, but still, if everything is ok with firewood, then Linux (something on xfce4 or lxqt) or Chromium OS is preferable. In my next room, a mammoth flies on AMD athlone, then I upgraded the most deshman SSD and 4GB of RAM from alik (800r question)

If you want to try a very lightweight distribution, then you should look at DSL or Puppy Linux

The first step is to see if you can add more memory.
If not, consider installing an SSD drive.
I currently have W'XP. New browsers haven't been released for it for a long time, I have FF'52.9.0 - and it now takes up 731 MB of RAM.

In principle, if the motherboard allows you to drive 3-4 gigs and there is an extra SSD drive, then you can leave it for home use. Proc dual-core, like up to 2.4 GHz are, in the browser you can rummage around.
Prots on aliexpress, memory on Avito.
If you don’t want to bother, then throw off Avito for a couple of thousand.

There was a similar task - to revive the acer aSpire 5010. The winXP sticker, as it were, hinted at the choice of OS ... but to be honest, there are no latest versions of popular browsers for it, and what is is rather slowly. In general, I tried many popular linux distros - they all worked a little worse than winxp in terms of speed. But I came across astra linux. It turned out to be a very smart distro. When loading, it eats about 180-200 mb (only 2 GB ddr1 in the system) and surfing the internet is much more comfortable than winxp. In turnips, this distro does not have the latest versions of the browser, but I solved it through snapd.
