Setting Meterpreter?

Hello. I'm new in this business. I say right away, I'm not one of those "coolhackers", it's really very interesting to me. I'm only doing this out of academic interest. Who can help - I will be grateful. The rest politely ask to pass by.
The point is this. I dug myself a good pentest course for beginners. There, the dude talks about meterpreter, shellter , etc.
I did everything as shown there, but still something is not right .. I have Kali on VB

I tried the trojan both on the virtual machine and on my 2nd laptop, but nothing .. Silence .. The session does not open.
In general, I ask knowledgeable and experienced people to help deal with meterpreter.
