Scan via WIA stopped working?

Wrote a script that starts the scanning process on scanners that support WIA.
For a couple of years everything worked without problems. The script works on 9 computers.
Recently stopped working on different PCs gives the following: "An unspecified error occurred during an attempted communication with WIA device." And the scanner starts scanning. And the error occurs in the line where the image is received from the device.
Dancing with a tambourine does not help. Only reinstalling the OS helped.
The trouble is that the situation repeats itself with enviable regularity.
What to do?
