If you use redmine, it is highly desirable to have a person on staff who can write in ruby. Similarly for all other open source task managers. Otherwise, you will not be able to quickly fix bugs, make the necessary extensions. Of the free solutions, it is even better to choose the one that you can support, the technologies of which have people in the state.
And why use it - set tasks for working groups and monitor their implementation. We in one large operator put work orders for installers and network administrators in it, started incidents, planned scheduled work, etc.

It is a universal control system. Not without sin. Good where other management tools will not pass.
For example, for HelpDesk it is better to use ZenDesk or OmniDesk. But while there is no volume, no budget, the company has not matured, etc. - you can completely replace Redmine. It turns out crooked, but tolerable.
For development, GitHub / GitLab Tracker is so cool for me. Where, again, volume allows. When there are 2-3 developers or more for 1 product. When 1 developer is busy with 10 micro products (shit sites), then on the contrary, Redmine is somewhere more convenient.
For process flow management and automation - also tolerable. Redmine has a weak subsystem of hooks in relation to WordPress. But for 90% of the tasks in terms of refinement, it is enough. The fact that there is at least some kind of it at all already gives odds in comparison with analogues. This is not the case with 99% of other alternatives, even in such an embryonic state.
In general, when there is a budget and you need direct flexibility and coolness, that was the experience with WordPress. There, in terms of flexibility and development opportunities, Redmine simply smokes on the sidelines. But it was not possible to develop this idea to the community. And then the platform remained to live in the company where it was born. If we talk about open source flexibility, community strength, selfhosted opportunities, then Redmine is probably the market leader. In this combination, it is difficult for him to find an alternative.
In general, its strength and weakness is in its versatility. It loses to specialized tools in separate processes and groups, but wins where narrow ones slip. Therefore, it is more correct to combine it with other solutions. It turns out a balance between the strategies Suite & Best of breed.
But if there is a budget of a million rubles a month and the company is large enough (from 1000 employees), then I would take WordPress :)
