All of a sudden I wanted something like this. Requirements:
-Self-hosted
-Free
-timeline
-tasks\deadlines
-notes, chat\forum variant of communication
-many roles (so that the customer can follow the progress of development)

ps - preferably php!

Who can advise?

Frischnoe everything without exception is much inferior to commercial solutions in terms of ease of use.
If it wasn't for the freebies, I would recommend Jira or TargetProcess.

Unfortunately, I did not find a suitable project manager for php.
Of those that I used, I can recommend:
* Redmine (RoR)
* Trac (Python)
* Jira (Java, commercial)

I am also looking for this, I join the question.
From what I tried, it more or less came up - fengoffice (for me, the chat forum and the timeline did not seem to be seen).
Of the almost free ones, I looked at freelance-cockpit-2 codecanyon.net/item/freelance-cockpit-2-project-management/full_screen_preview/4203727 I liked it the most, although it needs to be adapted. For the test, you can also find a script in RuNet (on php).
Due to disappointment, I even started writing my own - I wrote a part of adding customers and there is not enough time.
PS I won’t say for sure for all the requirements, but you can pay attention to:
Codendi
ProjectPier
Clocking IT (ruby)

from what is written in PHP, Open Atrium looks the most worthy

I understand that you want selfhosted, but still look towards asana.com

www.projectmanagementsoftware.com/
not a bad list to look through, maybe something will do.

Active Collab - fits the requirements. We have been modifying a little for ourselves, we have been using it for more than a year, managers and developers are satisfied.

Up to 5 users Team Foundation Server is free, it is attached to MS Project, in version 13 it seems to be able to be a git server.

Teambox was enough for us to solve. Of course, it is inferior to many monsters and monsters, but it is quite warm and lamp-like. Only one "but" - it's in ruby.
