Rackmount NAS available: Infortrend gse pro 1004 or synology RS815+?
We need the most affordable 20TB rackmount NAS per point. Packed with the cheapest SATA drives. Disks, of course, we want to install separately. Now I'm comparing synology RS815 + and infortrend gse pro 1004. They cost about the same. And who really has better performance and what does it depend on? For example, the infotrend states that theirs is a hardware raid, while others have a software one. What does it mean?

A hardware raid is when all the processing of operations for a raid is done by a special processor of the raid controller, separate from the CPU. This offloads the CPU, allowing it to do only "command".
A software raid is when all such calculations are done by the CPU. Synology has a 100% software raid. The presence of a hardware raid noticeably increases the cost of the design, so it is quite possible that the infotrend also has a software raid.
What is usually paid for when buying a shelf without disks?
Do you think for iron? Yes, figurines, from the point of view of iron - a tattered office computer, if you poke a 4-port network card into it, it will easily cover the shelf. Pay for software .
Yes, yes, for this very shell, which gives the shelf, which is the essence of linux, a human face. Of course, no one bothers to connect to it via ssh, install optware and trudge, but such people don’t buy shelves :D
Infortrend GSe Pro is something new. Hardware raid (if Infortrend Gse has one) improves system performance for backup and restore, especially on legacy hardware with limited processing power, by adding DRAM cache to the system. Reduces system load when writing backups and reduces downtime when restoring data. Adds RAID configuration options that might otherwise not be available using only the motherboard, such as RAID 5/6 which allows single and double drive failures. A separate hardware raid also protects against data corruption due to power loss during the backup process.
