Prices for hard drives
Good day.
Today I discovered that the prices for hard drives have risen 2-3 times (I looked at 500 - 1000 GB; internal; sata; seagate, hitachi; Kyiv).
Questions:
1. What caused?
2. When will the prices drop?

An acquaintance lives in Thailand, says that prices there have risen a bit. And for “you” (Russia and the CIS), this is called “business”.
The flood knocked down not only WD, but also other manufacturers. Because Seagate, whose assembly lines did not sink, depends on components that it purchased from manufacturers that were also affected by the flood.
And although some report on the resumption of production (transfer to other countries or in factories after a flood) - keep in mind that the final product is the sum of all components and the fact that someone resumed and lowered prices does not mean that everyone did it .
For example, Hitachi has already released a series of 7K1000.D disks that uses terabyte platters with a higher recommended price than they were in August for similar models.
You also need to take into account that WD needs to rebuild quite a lot almost from scratch ... this means a large investment. The company physically cannot drop the price, given that the profitability of hard drives is already low. Well, the rest will play at higher prices. If you can sell more expensively, you know that a competitor won’t do it cheaper (there aren’t many manufacturers on the market) – does it make sense to sell cheaper? And so they will buy it.
Plus, remember Russian realities - in many countries they arrange Christmas discounts. But this does not apply to us. Every year from December to mid-February, in the field of iron, we observe “prices are higher, the range is lower, or even non-existent.” And prices return to "pre-December" only by March.
Bottom line - prices for hard drives will return to the "antediluvian" (meaning not before the flood of Noah with the ark) only by the summer.
Seagate says that they will not reach the previous level of production until the end of 2012. I can't vouch for the rest.
I think in a couple of months the prices will come closer to the original ones. .And in the light of a link to
HP promised to resume full production in a year.
So, let's hope that in a year it will be possible to buy a hard drive.
In fact, the prices for hard drives have soared so much with us. Many foreign stores keep prices so reasonable that it is even possible to pay off their delivery from, say, America (although I do not claim).

Prices: increased by 2.5 times.
Nothing can be done, it remains to accept ... and wait
The problem is that some manufacturers of parts on which many companies depend, in particular the production of engines for hard drives, have been flooded.
It seems like the first wave of panic subsided, but there is no reason to think that we will quickly return to the previous prices. Especially in the light of such statements, as from a bigwig in Segate, that they say hard drives have always been underestimated and now they say we are getting a fair reward. Well, plus the greed of our hucksters has not been canceled.
The jumps are especially felt for those who collect arrays, I just ordered disks for the server, they cost almost 30k, although a month ago I would have taken them for 12-14k. To put it mildly, unpleasant.
Well, the picture with the dynamics of prices for WD1003FBYX for example -
