People of what profession develop processors and their architecture?

I would like to know what specialty you need to get in order to understand the principles of operation of processors, computers and other hardware, and ultimately become a hardware developer. I'm not saying that they immediately hire Itel, AMD and the like, before that you have to go and work for a long time. What do you need to learn on your own? Is the profession of a radiophysicist suitable? What is the general plan of action?
