OS for old computer

Hello!

I have an old computer - celeron 1GHz, 512 MB of RAM, some kind of built-in video card. He stands with his parents, connected to the TV. I want to make a machine out of it for watching movies from sites. Now it has XP on it, but it’s generally old, and it’s not stable ... I thought about installing Chrome OS, but I have concerns about the drivers, so I want to first consult on this matter, or maybe some other OS is suitable for these tasks ?

Or you can try Porteus , which is based on a very lightweight Razor-qt
. I have Razor-qt flying on Arch Linux with 512 MB of memory - I was very surprised.

Crunchbang linux is a lightweight distribution based on Debian. Very lightweight (uses openbox) and fast. Internet and movies - no problem, and even without any tincture will work.
The only thing is that you will first have to explain where and how to click to launch the browser - open the folder. But it's easy. I put it on my old laptop for relatives a few years ago - they still use it (skype, youtube, classmates).

You won't find anything faster than kolibri os. She is good, but you have to become an engineer to assemble an adequate viewer on her.
More functional and easier to use - GNU / linux, but old builds are almost not supported anymore, and new ones are built for new hardware. Yes, they are not demanding on him, but still Celeron 1GHz is at least thirteen years in the past. And thirteen years ago, he was far from the most powerful piece of iron.
But " to watch movies from sites"obviously impossible task. When "celeron 1GHz" was released, there were no films on sites or sites with films in nature. The maximum that it could have enough performance for was to spin low-resolution mpeg-2 (dvd), hardly anyone now He uses it on websites, and then there's this flash, which has multi-core video cards.

If you have time and a car to assemble.
gentoo+lxde\xfce. Browser midori, for YouTube minitube. What is a “website video” anyway? What formats, resolutions, bitrates?
With proper sharpening for iron, it will be faster than any binary distro. I have a working laptop with the same process as you wrote, gig of operatives, so on it under gentoo + xfce even firefox with chrome is plowed normally, video in 720p is quite watchable, although 1080p really slows down. But if you take a vidyuhi that can xvba, then you can watch 1080p.

The easypeasy distribution for netbooks is designed for computers with low performance.

Given the performance and challenges associated with mastering a new platform, ubuntu is the best choice for this purpose. Windows is characterized by a decrease in performance, perhaps the problem will be solved by a new installation of Windows.

If not a single lightweight Linux (of which there are many high-quality ones) is suitable, then Haiku with Qt software should work quickly on such a machine. It’s already good for video and multimedia, but only from browsers so far WebPositive and Qupzilla (well, Arora). You can watch online videos from Youtube, but until there is a normal plug-in for one of the browsers, you have to use crutches .

In my opinion, it's easier to set up XP so that it "works stably" (I can't imagine how it is - "XP is unstable")
If you decide with alternative OSes, then I would recommend Puppy ( PuppyRus is completely ready for a Russian user), but you can get confused and put Syllable . Completely finished minimal system. It has not been updated, of course, for 2 years, well, the computer has been more than 10, apparently, it has not been updated. ;-)
