RAM affects download speed. To understand these things more deeply, you need to work with web applications / sites for mobile devices.

Take Atom of the first generations, and try loading any site with complex javascript on it - you will see the difference (I got 3 times (compared to athlon XP 3400+) on a simple site with jquery).
CSS can also be expensive to apply these days.
