As far as I know, nginx itself works with static content and gives everything else to external handlers.
Try nginx + apache. Usually such a bundle is used.
I personally squid did not cause problems. Perhaps there are not enough sub processes. In conjunction with authorization, I once had to expand the number of sub-processes to the number of users.
Might be worth a closer look at the configuration.
