Monitor selection. Retina for web design?
Tell me how to be in a situation or tell about your method of work.
Faced a problem. Can't decide on an external monitor.
I have a MacBook Pro 15 "2017. It is used as the main device for work.
The main direction of work is web design.
In stationary conditions, I would like to have an external monitor connected to a laptop for comfortable work.
There are no problems with graphics in general.
Problem only when developing websites, since layouts are developed mainly for non-retina.It is more difficult to draw on a retina after a regular monitor at a scale of 100% due to half the size, and at 200% it is inconvenient, it is difficult to evaluate the final result on a regular monitor + a pixel is lost -perfect
Tested two normal monitors:
- Dell 24'' U2412M --- 1920x1200
- NEC 24'' MultiSync EA244WMI --- 1920x1080
Drawing sites in real size is convenient. But the picture quality is not very good.
I tested a larger monitor:
- BenQ 25" PD2500Q --- 2560 x 1440 It
's convenient to draw websites in real size, there is a lot of space for tools.
But the interface is really small. It's very difficult to read something.
Because MacOs does not have a normal zoom function, sometimes I had to go around zooming in the browser, and partially on the macos itself in some places. But this is not comme il faut. You sit close to the monitor, you read normal, sometimes small print.
I thought this particular monitor would solve the problem. The monitor is excellent. 4K works fine retina.
tested a 4K monitor:
- LG 23.8 "24UD58-B --- 3840x2160
Thanks to 4K, you can scale the entire interface, and not individual elements of the macOS and scale it in the browser.
But the problem is that scaling on any 4K (retina) does not mean changing the real mode of operation.
In fact, if you set the scale as 1920x1080, then only the macOS interface will increase. In reality, the same images will be displayed in 3840x2160 frames. In fact, they either stretch. Or when specifying a one-to-one scale, they will be very small on the screen.
I can't figure out what to do in this situation. Maybe you need to go back to regular monitors.
In principle, through reflection, I come to the conclusion that it will not work to make a picture of 1920 and watch it at 4K. The quality will suffer in any case. Because physically there are 4 times more pixels.
27 inches is a lot. I'm thinking of trying the old Apple Led Cinema Display 24" --- 1920x1200
This is the question. Who does web development. What external monitor are you using? And how the development process itself is organized. When is the dev monitor 4k and the client monitor 2k?
There are thoughts about this. Share. Thank you.

You do everything very simply in 4k, and then you ask the layout designer to set the scale to 50% in the image size menu. Well, or you scale everything yourself and save it on a 50% scale, send it to the customer.
From what I found on the Internet on this issue: There are two resolutions and sizes of the diagonal of the monitor on which the picture will be super clear and not hurt the eyes, this is 21.5 "Full HD (1900x1080), or 27" 2K (2560x1440). This is true for conventional 2k monitors. It will be convenient to design a site 1 in 1 on them. Along the way, this option will have to be considered.
But then the question remains different.
Are there designers who design websites in 4k for 2k monitors? How do you visually evaluate the result of the work?
I recently wrote a post on this topic - https://macosworld.ru/external-monitor-for-macbook/
It's
easier to take 27 and 2K. The most reliable option right now.
