Mikrotik: why huge ping through ip tunnel?

There are two Mikrotiks, one on a normal wired Internet, the other on a satellite (there is no alternative to a satellite). A tunnel has been raised between them. Pings to external interfaces (on the outside) are within the normal range, 600-800ms. Pings between subnets from 800 to 3500ms. Why such a ping and how can I get rid of it?

172.16.23.0/24 -> satellite

In my opinion, when using a satellite channel, high ping is inevitable.

confused you with MTU to the fullest.
you must not reduce the MTU, as this will lead to an increase in the load on the channel, you must set the MTU to the one that the provider gives you. and then you just have to set the change-mss data window for the tunnel.
and also clarify which tunnel you are using?
