Make money on the application through advertising or Open Source?

I graduated from the IT-specialty, I have no work experience, I will continue my studies in the magistracy.
I have an idea for a small desktop application. Potential users - all Windows users, no restrictions, general purpose application.
Tell me, please, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the options:
1) a closed C#/WPF project for making money through advertising (for example, Google AdSense);
2) Open Source in C ++ / QML in order to have something to show when applying for a job.
While interested in both platforms.

If the idea is really good, then maybe it makes sense to make it commercial, maybe it will grow into a successful company, or maybe not.
I would choose the option "create a project that you can show at the interview and get a good job", but the choice is yours, it's your life. The choice between the two options is purely subjective and you must make it yourself.

And what prevents you from making an Open Source project, and at the same time making money on advertising?
Or what prevents you from writing an Open Source project in C#/WPF?

In your case, definitely Open Source - if there are at least 1000 users in your application - consider it a hat and at least an internship in a normal IT company is provided to you!
