Links to files to sync with Dropbox?

Hello!
I can not understand. What (and how) do you need to make links to files so that when they change, they are updated in Dropbox?
What would be clearer. For example, I have a ".vimrc" file in my home directory. What link to it should be made in the Dropbox folder? Symlink or hardlink or what? Or is it done in some other way?
OS is linux.

It works for me like this. The files themselves are in Dropbox, in other places there are symbolic links to them. In particular, Documents, Pictures, etc.
