Linking a Windows 8.1 license to a Microsoft account
The purchased laptop came with a licensed windows 8, logged in under my Microsoft account at the first start. At the moment, you need to format the HDD and install Linux, but you just don’t want to lose the license. Is a copy of windows tied to an account? If yes - automatically, or do you need to do something manually? If not, how can you keep this license? There was nothing to do with windows.

The OEM license that comes with a computer is tied to the hardware (more specifically, to the motherboard) and cannot be transferred to another computer. Also, it is not allowed to replace the motherboard except for its malfunction during the warranty period.
If you meant restoring Windows on the same laptop, then the easiest way is to make an image of the hard drive, then recover from it.
