Layout of a long list (for example, the contents of a directory - as in Explorer)

Please tell me a solution in HTML + CSS or JS, in extreme cases, a plugin for jQuery or prototype.js, which will allow you to display a long list of relatively short text strings (for example, the contents of a directory) across the entire width of a given rectangular screen area in the form of columns of the same width with columns filled from top to bottom and flowing the rest of the list to the next column in the same way as in most file managers. If the entire list does not fit in the specified area, then a horizontal scroll bar should appear at the bottom to move to the last columns of the list. I hope I have clearly described what I need, I myself have not googled anything like this yet.
