Um. My grandmother is 72 years old, a couple of months ago I brought her a laptop with ubuntu installed. To simplify, I removed all the panels and put a dock a la poppy with icons of the necessary programs in order to “poke and it will work”. Well, I put more fonts, of course. As a result, there were 5 buttons below - chess, browser, skype, video player, shutdown. Just impossible. I spent a week of time studying, after which my grandmother began to surf the Internet quite independently. I'm not afraid for the safety from viruses, because linux, and all sorts of terrible windows from antiviruses do not pop up. Now several times a week we communicate via video via Skype, sometimes asking if something is not clear.
Windows, in my opinion, has a very overloaded interface, and this cannot be changed in a simple way. A complex interface is a long and difficult learning curve. Have pity on older people, don't load them with a bunch of incomprehensible menus and buttons.
The main thing is to make the font bigger. It would be nice to record short videos on how to use what, so that you can always watch and remember.
I think it's worth trying to send a tablet.
It's more intuitive.
Tactilene is a familiar way of interacting (before birth).

Many people can't get used to the touchpads on a laptop.
You can try a cheap Chinese android.
Watching the Internet and writing letters is enough.
If the android version is 2.1 then skype will work.
Well, I think not turning on the computer is more of an emergency. Already the button is on. they won't lose) Clips can be recorded from the monitor for the programs they're supposed to be using. You can also set the opening of files with one click and instead of an enlarged font, you can simply make the resolution smaller, so that the font in the programs is large and the icons are large on the desktop.
in Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display set 150% - so that you can see the icons and text better
and try to teach how to run mail, skype and what they will do most often.
