Is it relevant to convert icons to fonts?

About 5 years ago it was fashionable to convert icons into fonts. I haven’t done layout for a very long time, I remember suffering with these conversions. Is it relevant now?
Many sites just insert huge svg code into the template, but this is inconvenient, no?

I don't do conversions. If a ready-made pack is used, such as FontAwesome - I connect it. And so symbolic SVG sprites are much more convenient for me.
