Is it possible to replace the Sandy Bridge processor with an Ivy Bridge one on the motherboard?

The motherboard on the Sandy Bridge chipset, if you put the Ivy Bridge processor - will it work?
Or is it always important that Sandy on Sandy, Ivy on Ivy?
