Is it possible to move a character in Illustrator using "direct selection" (white cursor)?

I often stretch layouts in the chandelier using the "white cursor" the problem is that the white cursor does not highlight the characters, and when stretched they remain in place.

You are using dynamic symbols. When directly selected and moved, they remain in their places, because with them, direct selection only works for selecting fills, strokes, etc. Moving nodes and dragging vectors in a dynamic symbol will not work with direct selection.
Use static symbols or simple selection.
