Using GPT instead of MBR will not affect the speed in any way. You either have something actively eating up resources, or the HDD is slowly failing.

Yes, I know at least a couple of programs that do this without losing information - these are Paragon's HDM and AOMEI Partition Manager. In order not to bother with the search for their portable version for the sake of a one-time need, you can use any tool-recovery LiveDVD / LiveUSB containing the well-known utility package 2k10 - it has them. But it's better to get it from the very beginning - it will come in handy in a thousand cases later (I personally use MultiBoot ).
