Is it possible to be fruitful in freelancing without developing for the web?

I'm thinking about moving from the office to freelancing. I poked around freelance exchanges - the vast majority of orders - web. Tell me, is it possible for a developer writing in languages like java, scala, c++ to work as a freelancer? Or will it be difficult?
And how do such developers make a portfolio? It's clear with the sites - I added the link and that's it. And what about desktop software?

A lot of things are asked to develop not for the web, a lot concerns Java, mobile platforms, just desktop software for companies, quite a lot of organizational work (by the way, organizers who are good at managing people receive a salary of under $10k per month), a lot of work with translations, a lot of work with telephony voip. And that's just what I touched on the dress.

Alternatively, you can find remote work. She has almost all the advantages of freelancing (well, except perhaps for the point - I want to work, I want to fool around), but you don’t need to take a steam bath and look for orders.

As for me, in this direction it is best to work on foreign exchanges, and even better - in a team. In our market, you can find employment 100% of the time, but you will have to work hard until you get a "smooth" job.
