IP/PPP networking. How is data sent?

In networks where Ethernet is used at the data link layer, everything is clear. If the destination IP is on the source subnet, an ARP request is sent, the destination MAC is learned, and the packet is sent to the switch. If in a different subnet - the packet is sent to the main gateway. But what happens if PPP is used at the data link layer?

So the only difference is that you do not need to send an ARP request. Because there are only two devices. And without ARP, it is clear that at the data link layer they can only talk to each other.
Well, ARP is not needed, but at higher levels everything is the same. According to the routing table.
If the host on the other end of PPP is a gateway, then everything will be sent to it. If it is not a gateway and there are no other gateways, then no route to host.
