How to turn off AirPlay?

This is what I see:

The AirPlay icon appeared out of the blue, although I never connected another monitor on the laptop. How did it happen that the service decided that there is something to connect to? I tried to kill the process through System Monitor, but it doesn't kill.
Yes, you can uncheck the box, but this is not a solution.

The icon is visible if there are AirPlay clients on the network. This way you know exactly when you are broadcasting your display - the icon is highlighted in blue, and when not - it is white.
