How to turn a color LCD monitor into Gray-Scale

The computer has two Windows (7 and xp).
I would like to adjust the colors of the video card in at least one of them so that all the color information of the images completely disappears, and only shades of gray remain (that is, so that during the main operation of the computer the visual effect would be exactly the same as when you press the button to turn off the computer when choosing a shutdown option).
IMHO such a color (well, or vice versa, colorless) scheme is ideal for working at night.

Has anyone actually managed to do this in practice?
Or is it only hypothetical possible designs?

Try in your video card driver settings. For example, in the "nvidia control panel" "digital intensity" is responsible for this.

In Windows 7 You can calibrate screen colors (Control Panel - Display - Color Calibration).

Gee, I tried it - it's cool, but the code highlighting is not enough, I returned it.

You can select the "contrast" color scheme in the desktop settings. Also adjust colors in editors, etc. Lots of tuning work, of course.
Another way is to adjust the gamma correction in the video card driver. It is absolutely certain that this is possible with Intel GMA.
