How to secure the transfer of the template to the customer, and get paid for it?

I was found through acquaintances of acquaintances, and not through a freelance exchange. Now I'm studying, but I'm glad to earn extra money. They need to make up a template from layouts, there are deadlines and I’m already working. The question is: how to protect yourself from fraud when you need to send the finished work. Are there any ways? And what are the typical ways of cheating?
Thanks for the help!

Show layout in the basement, handcuffed, at a distance of 10 meters. Then it won't get stolen.
But seriously, if you found it through friends, then you have a reputation and you can safely ask for an advance payment.
Although I would not bother with the "throw not throw" account. If there is not a "work of the century" for 20k man-hours, then you can simply show it.

Only through freelance exchanges.
The bottom line is that the exchange acts as an intermediary, the work begins only after the customer has transferred the entire amount to the special. a deposit in the exchange, where it will be, as it were, frozen until the end of the work on the project. In this case, the kidok is practically excluded from both the customer and the contractor.
Of course, the exchange will take a percentage of the transaction for this. But you have to pay for security.
Another way is to develop contacts, look for regular customers.
In your case, you can only rely on the words of acquaintances.

They fear exactly the same.
Confidence.
Not such a loss, if anything.
Or:
send the result and receive payment in parts - if the template consists of several pages.
and give the demo as a picture.
But not all customers will like it - it is impossible to fully verify it.
Serious customers, who have a lot of dough, will definitely not like it.
