How to properly hook up Volume in DigitalOcean?

There is a server on DO, where the place ends. The main consumer is the "uploads" folder, where relatively many pictures are uploaded via the web.
To solve the problem of space, it is planned to simply hook up one Volume to the server.
The problem is this: the new Volume is a new mount point, and I really don't want to split the uploads folder into parts. That is, I would like to have a large uploads folder, which is physically located on two disks: half in /var/www/, half in /mnt/volume-1.
I see two solutions:
1. Transfer the entire folder to Volume, make a symlink to its contents, upload new files to the main disk (this will last for a couple of years);
2. Make a soft raid.
Maybe there are some other options?

There is also an option with OverlayFS and alternatives (if the kernel is old) if you don't need to change existing files (or at least most of them). There will be two file system layers - the read-only part on the bottom, and the top one for writing. The files on the bottom layer can, as far as I know, be changed, but the changes will be stored on the top layer.
