How to propagate Firefox and Thunderbird settings via GPO?

The essence of the question is that I want to edit some settings that are available in the "registry" of these programs through about:config
Is there a civilized way to do this without resorting to neurosurgery with dirty scripts in prefs.js, which says "DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE "?

No.
As far as I understand, this is done because FF is available for both Windows and Linux, but there is no native GPO in Linux. And apparently they do not want to fence a separate code specifically for Windows.
