How to prevent Google Play from downloading/installing/updating multiple apps at the same time?

It often happens that if you press "update all" when updates are available and let the updates start downloading in parallel, you either get an error of lack of built-in flash memory, or (more often) they just freeze and "download" ad infinitum. Moreover, if you manually poke each update, let it complete and then move on to the next one, then everything is always in order. Can I somehow configure it to automatically install / update everything strictly sequentially one at a time?

In fact, updated applications are downloaded and installed just in turn. Therefore, you need to solve the problem with lack of memory sooner. Install everything on an external flash drive, for example.
