How to plot using Xgraph or TraceGraph in Ns2 (network Simulator2) on Windows XP?

When running in ns2 through Cygwin on Windows XP, I don’t understand the example.nam file, how it is possible to plot graphs from simulations carried out in ns2, i.e. what needs to be done to get plots in Xgraph (or TraceGraph), should the data from the simulation be saved to a separate file, which can then be opened in Xgraph or TraceGraph, and how, in this case, to open Xgraph (TraceGraph is launched by clicking on exe file, while trying to open xgraph by pressing exe gives the error "This application has failed to start because cygwin.dll was not found". Cygwin writes
$ ns xgraph.exe
invalid command name "MZÿÿ¸@º´"
while executing
"MZÿÿ¸@º´ Í!¸LÍ!
(file "xgraph.exe" line 1)
Aborted
