How to place text in OS X tray?

I'm currently working on a project that needs to implement text display functionality in the OS X system tray. I read the NSStatusItem docs first , but as it turns out, the setTitle and setAttributedTitle functions I'm interested in have been deprecated since version 10.10. How to be now? I think it should also be mentioned that I have a non-native C++ application.
And one more question: is it possible to display text in the tray without an icon?
