How to password protect an external HDD?

I make backups to my external hdd, well, of course, I store information on it that I would like to protect from third-party access.
Of course, there is a password on the laptop, but how to protect an external drive?
We need a cross-platform solution, because I myself use mac, but sometimes I have to transfer information to win.

I am using TrueCrypt.
Can encrypt entire volumes. Free. If the drive is connected without truecrypt, it will be seen as empty unformatted.
