How to make ubuntu-desktop work on server 17.10 installed with --no-install-recommends key?

When installing ubuntu-desktop --no-install-recommends on a clean Ubuntu 17.10 server with updates installed, it crashes back to the login screen upon login (on both VirtualBox and Hyper-v). With a full installation works everywhere. Is it worth it to bother and try to figure it out?

It looks like you don't have any Desktop Environment, it comes with ubuntu-desktop
Install some DE - lxqt, lxde, xfce etc
