How to make custom hotkeys work in Ubuntu 16.04?

In Ubuntu, in System Settings - Keyboard - Shortcuts - Custom Shortcuts, you can set your own keyboard shortcuts that perform certain commands.
No matter how I twisted it, I couldn't get it to work. There is a similar question
on Askubuntu.com , but nothing written there or on other sites asking for "ubuntu custom shortcuts not working" helped. If anyone knows, thanks in advance.

And in what layout do you type them, these combinations that they don’t work for you? It's just that if you hung something on 'Ctrl+Alt+Q', then if you please, type 'Ctrl+Alt+Q', not 'Ctrl+Alt+Q'
