How to make a system image from a virtual machine?

There is a virtual machine in VMware, in which everything is configured and installed as needed, how is it easiest to make an image from the inside or outside to install my system no longer on a virtual machine or somewhere else? Preferably from within

If inside VMWare - there is the concept of Templates. There are tools that allow, when deploying a template, to customize the operating system each time automatically according to given templates.
If for installation on other hardware (baremetal) - then some kind of acronis thread.

I don't know about VMware, but in VirtualBox
1. convert VM media to *.img format
2. sudo dd ...
