How to make a stupid monitor and keyboard for PC from an old laptop?

It sounds very strange, but I need a portable device in dimensions like a laptop that can be connected by wire to a PC and get a monitor + keyboard, which, like a PC (box-shaped small system unit), can be placed in a backpack. So the thought came to my mind, if you can’t sanely connect a working laptop to a PC, then what if you pull out the mother from the laptop and connect the matrix with the keyboard with some kind of adapter directly to the system unit? What can you suggest about this? Or advise an alternative, any monitor and keyboard layout will do (I know that laptops are easier to carry, but I need a solution for a regular system manager).
