How to join embedded development?

I'll start from afar. For a long time I was looking for a direction in development. Tried almost everything. I developed freelance websites, made mobile applications (android), programs with a user interface (C #, Java), worked in a company specializing in the development of software in the field of information security (linux kernel), currently I work in a large game development company (c ++) . I studied all this deeply, but at some moments I realized that it was not mine. Everywhere there are some nuances that repelled me. The only thing I understood is that I like the C language (and a little bit of pluses), hardware, low-level programming and, most importantly, so that I can "feel" the result of my work. I recently found out that there is an embedded direction and I was very interested in it.
Now directly the essence of the question) How can I join in this? Is this a promising business? What literature is better to read and in general, where is it better to start? I would like to hear the advice of people who are already working in this area.

The specifics of embedded development - very often the developer must be physically close to the production. Because of this, embedded developers have long been in little demand in the post-Soviet space - mainly on government orders - the military commissar, the railway. In the past few years, outsourcing has begun to come into this area en masse, but salaries are still noticeably below average programmers. In embedded development, there is an active transition from microcontrollers to Linux in any resource-intensive applications. The low level in this case is the kernel level drivers - a rather specific topic and difficult to debug.
