How to fade out a layer?

There is a video - cardiograms of the heart (pulsations).
How to make it fade out from the starting points? For example.

Before the start of the 3rd beat, the cardiogram should begin to disappear from the starting points, so that after the 3rd beat it will resume again. To make it work like in this video

Roughly speaking, to make the tail of the diagram disappear over time.

Separate the background from the cardiogram, put the background on the bottom layer and leave it alone.
On the top layer with a square mask (optionally with a border blur) animate with the help of keyframes the movement of this mask, from left to right. It is enough to set the opacity to 0 as a parameter for the mask. Thus, everything that is covered by the mask will be completely transparent - there will be no cardiogram, only the background.
