How to develop and advance as a programmer / web programmer?

I am a freelancer. When I first started, it was problematic to find customers, but now I have a more or less good portfolio on freelance exchanges and customers began to find me themselves, but there is still little work. What development paths are there? (eg: heard about the great github site).

What about github? Well, if you are developing some worthy open source projects, then post it there and indicate it in your portfolio, maybe some advanced customer will appreciate it.
Or have you never heard of VCS and don't use them in your projects?
