How to connect to VPN on a virtual machine?

I run the OpenVPN client on the guest machine (Linux) and try to connect via VPN to the servers - nothing happens.
It seems to be connected successfully (the console says:) Initialization Sequence Completed, but it does not connect to the desired server. Although if I start the connection on the host (Windows), then everything works.
Are there any particularities of using a VPN connection in a virtual machine?
What do I need to do to connect successfully?
