How to connect laptop with DisplayPort or Thunderbolt to 4K TV?

• Laptop with discrete graphics card and DisplayPort and Thunderbolt outputs
  
• 4K TV with multiple HDMI inputs
  

I tried it simply: I took a DisplayPort-HDMI adapter and connected it. TV connected, only with a resolution of 1080p. Not good!
Question: what needs to be done to get 4K? (The laptop definitely pulls 4K.) The laptop also has a Thunderbolt output, can it be used somehow? Or do you need another adapter?
