How to boot from flash drive on mac?

When I turn on the mac, I press the alt key, the mac starts up, but does not turn on the screen until I remove the USB flash drive from the port (on the iso kali flash drive). How can this be fixed? Heard that macOS mojavi doesn't allow you to boot from external media.
