How to assign to the Play button, opening another application for listening to music?

This moment tormented me all the time.
If my application is not running through which I listen to music (now, for example, it's Spotify), then when I press the "play" key, it always opens the standard application (Music / iTunes). How to replace this moment, what would open the application I need?

Take a look at https://github.com/beardedspice/beardedspice
last time I tested it on mojave, so I can't guarantee it.
upd: here they write what works. Plus one more utility is specified.
