How many ink cartridges do you need for multicolor printing?

I want to buy a printer, but it turned out that not two cartridges (bw and color) are included in the kit, but four (bw, and three color).
What are the downsides? Do you need all three color cartridges for multi-color printing?

The downsides are that the printer stops printing at all if only one cartridge runs out and that a set of 4 costs more than the printer.
